Starting kindergarten is one of the biggest milestones in your child’s life. The Journey to Kindergarten is a quick and easy reference that will provide information about the skills and experiences that are necessary to prepare a young child for school success. It will also give you the peace of mind to know you are doing just the right things to promote your child’s learning in a fun and interactive way.

Our History:

In 2010, a community partnership was envisioned by the Douglas County Early Childhood Council, the Douglas County Libraries, and the Douglas County School District. The Temple Buell Foundation generously provided grant monies to support the project. Kerry Goudy, Early Childhood Consultant and President of The Toudalou Company, was appointed project director for The Journey to Kindergarten. Kerry assembled a project team of early childhood experts in Douglas County. This dedicated and knowledgeable team attended over a year of meetings where kindergarten readiness research was identified, discussed, and debated. A framework emerged for five important topics in school readiness: Language and Literacy, Math and Science, Social Skills and Relationships, Approaches to Learning, and Health and Wellness. Important skills for each topic were summarized into an easy to read format with activity suggestions. This is not a checklist or assessment but rather a guide for the journey of learning that begins when a baby is born and continues though one’s lifetime.

Parents, grandparents, early care providers, librarians, and others, please take 10-15 minutes to read and learn about The Journey to Kindergarten. Select several activity suggestions and begin to engage with your young child who will learn and grow from participating in these fun and interactive activities. Continue to add creative activities of your own and watch your young child grow in curiosity, enthusiasm, and confidence as they prepare to enter school.
